Annual Giving

Syracuse City Ballet is a place that makes dreams come true. Certainly in the stories we tell on stage. But even more so by giving incredibly talented and dedicated young dancers from our community the chance to work hard and shine in outstanding professional productions alongside leading national and international stars.

resident dancer fund

Syracuse City Ballet has created a Resident Dancer Fund that will be used to compensate professional in-house dancers for their work as teachers, coaches, performers and leaders in our youth outreach program, in turn, creating an opportunity for them to live in and contribute to our community as an artist.

Alejandro Cobas, a Cuban refugee, moved to Syracuse, NY in hopes of following his dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer. He studied at the prestigious Cuban School of Ballet and was a dancer with the Camaguey Company of Cuba where he performed in major ballets such as Coppelia, Giselle, Don Quixote and Corsaire. He came to New York with nothing but a small backpack, a few necessities , and the language barrier of not speaking English, hoping to turn his dreams into a reality. From the beginning he was eager to take as many classes and attend as many rehearsals as possible, even if it took him three hours round trip to walk to and from the studio in the middle of the winter.

Once staff and families from the studio heard his story everyone began reaching out helping him with some of his basic necessities and providing rides so he no longer had to walk the long distance to and from class. In just three weeks, Alejandro learned several roles for the ballet’s upcoming performance, Snow White, and was been instrumental in assisting the staff with his ballet partnering skills as well as bringing an energetic and powerful presence to the studio. He is eager for new experiences with our staff and students, as well as sharing the richness of each others' culture and lifestyle. Within a month, his friend and fellow dancer Jose Carlo Pino, joined him here in Syracuse to pursue his dreams as well. Together, they are helping Syracuse City Ballet come to realize it's goal of having Resident Dancers.
